Hybrid.[Theatre]. Ensemble is a theatre company that has been exploring the collisions of various cultures and societies, dance and theatre, realism and non-traditional theatre, and poetic text and gestural movement over the past four years. At the core of the Hybrid Ensemble is the use of body, shape, and imagery to shed light on the social injustices and life occurrences that change the world in which we live. Hybrid is interested in exploring the origins of these phenomena and questions their origins and continuing existence. The work we produce takes our viewers on a journey of juxtaposition, mysticism, and unconventionality and asks them to reevaluate the world, the arts, and culture.

“As the founding artistic director of Hybrid.[Theatre].Ensemble, it became my mission to define hybridity as a means of expression that cross-breeds forms of art and culture, and in doing so, makes a world of theatre that demolishes the edifices of commercial art through head-on collision.

Hybrid.[Theatre].Ensemble’s mission is to create innovation through this idea of head-on collision.” –Philip Sy Zisman, Founding Artistic Director

From May 24-May 27, 2012, Hybrid. [Theatre]. Ensemble will produce its New York City debut with the world premiere of Beneath the Skin. Beneath the Skin is a one-woman show written and performed by Elina Zavala and features choreography by Zavala and Artistic Director, Philip Sy Zisman, who is also directing the production. This piece is based off of true life events that occurred in the performer’s life and is portrayed through visceral media and technology, codified and stylized movement, and electronic music.

At the core of the show lies the true life event which Beneath the Skin is based off of and raises questions of medicine, technology, and the shifts in the body’s design. What happens when the body, a perfect and flawless vessel full of intricate design and complex inner workings becomes damaged? How does one cope or choose to cope? Do we let our imperfections destroy or further our new selves past limitations and notions of the ideal state of human anatomy?

Hybrid. [Theatre]. Ensemble’s work has become known for its use of theatrics, movement and the physical capabilities of the human body, and artistic design to create visually aesthetic performance pieces that begets an experience unlike any theatrical endeavor. Beneath the Skin is an experience that cannot be easily defined and must be experienced. Also, Beneath the Skin will be followed by performance artist and musician, Alo and the Narcissist, whose electronic styling is akin to the icons of the 80s glam pop era. Lastly, a by-donation bar will be serving cocktails, beer, and wine all night long.

Ladygunn and Cultured Productions threw an EPIC magazine release party to launch Ladygunn’s Winter Issue featuring Krysten Ritter (in stores now!) The Sea Life serenaded us with a live performance and DJ Jish kept the party going with a killer set. Artwork by Shannon Gentry hung on the walls and we were graced by many beautiful faces. It was definitely one hell of a party. Big shout out to 42Below for sponsoring the event and making delicious vodka cocktails. Extra special thanks to Superrseded, JFerb, Raiven Butler, and PANDA NYC for helping make this all happen.
